ALBERTA TOBACCO TAX ACT SPECIAL NOTICE:
TOBACCO TAX INCREASE

NOTE: This special notice is intended to explain legislation and provide specific information. Every effort has been made to ensure the contents are accurate. However, if a discrepancy should occur in interpretation between this special notice and governing legislation, the legislation takes precedence.

As part of Budget 2015, Alberta will increase its tobacco tax rates effective 12:01 a.m. on March 27, 2015. The new rates will be as follows:

Cigarettes and Tobacco Sticks

  • Cigarettes: $0.225 each
  • Tobacco sticks: $0.225 each

Other Tobacco

  • Fine cut tobacco: $0.3375 per gram or any portion of a gram
  • Pipe tobacco: $0.3375 per gram or any portion of a gram
  • Chewing tobacco and snuff: $0.3375 per gram or any portion of a gram

Cigars

  • 116% of the taxable price of the cigar
  • Minimum tax: $0.225 per cigar
  • Maximum tax: $7.05 per cigar
