The Hospitals Act was amended effective August 1, 1996 to include a provision to recover from third party liability insurers the Crown's cost of health services provided to victims of automobile accidents. Tax and Revenue Administration (TRA), Alberta Finance and Enterprise, is responsible for this recovery of automobile-accident-related health costs from insurers, under the Health Cost Recovery program. Automobile insurers must remit to TRA an amount for each calendar year representing their proportionate share of the total estimated Crown cost of those health services.
