Shifts in the age distribution result mainly from changes in fertility and, to a lesser degree, mortality. Overall, the impact of migration is less significant, but it can have a marked impact on specific age groups.
The relative size of the major cohorts in Alberta’s population is largely due to the differences in the size of the cohort at birth. For instance, the large Baby Boom cohort (born between 1946 and 1965) is the result of a rapid increase in fertility rates that occurred in a post-World War II period of economic prosperity. The dramatic decline in fertility rates immediately following the Baby Boom years leads to the Baby Bust cohort (born between 1965 and 1974). The “Echo” generation, children born to the large Boomer cohort between 1975 and 1995, also stands out in the pyramid.
