Alberta Population Pyramid

Population of Alberta (Age and Sex) - 1921 to 2008

The population pyramid below animates the changes in the age distribution of Alberta’s population over the period of 1921 to 2008.  Click here to play the animation again, or download the pdf version.

The age distribution within each time period varies for several reasons.

Generally, the top of the pyramid narrows due to higher death rates among the older versus younger population.

There are also socio-economic factors and events that affect the shape of a given population pyramid. For example, the 1930s and early 40s experienced an economic depression. However, between 1947 and 1966 the economy was growing and prospering, among other socio-economic changes, and a large group of people were born (i.e., the "baby boomers"). These changes in the population are illustrated in the 1960s pyramid: a wide base showing the increase in births and a narrowing of the population at age 20 reflecting those born during the depression.
